A structured pathway that prepares chess educators to work with students, deliver the Eighth Rank Chess curriculum, and grow as coaches.
A strong chess program needs strong coaches. Our coach pathway combines chess knowledge, teaching practice, curriculum training, and supervised instruction so coaches are prepared to work confidently with students. The goal is simple: every student should have a well-prepared coach who can create a positive, structured, and supportive learning environment.
The pathway
A structured pathway for developing confident and capable chess coaches.
An application, a short conversation, and a background check help us understand each coach’s experience, motivation, and readiness to work with students.
An introductory training covering the Eighth Rank Chess curriculum, lesson structure, classroom management, safeguarding, and practical teaching skills.
Trainees work alongside an experienced coach, gradually taking responsibility for more of the session while receiving structured feedback.
The trainee plans and leads a full session from the curriculum while experienced coaches observe the session using a shared assessment rubric.
Coaches who successfully complete the pathway may advance to lead coaching responsibilities, with ongoing training and support for continued development.

Eighth Rank Chess is developing a structured pathway for chess educators who want to teach, grow their skills, and contribute to the program. The pathway will combine chess knowledge, teaching practice, curriculum training, and observed instruction.
An introductory level focused on classroom support, chess instruction, and working with students under the guidance of a lead instructor.
Annual review and continued training.
A teaching level focused on independently delivering Eighth Rank Chess curriculum and supporting student progress.

You do not need a formal chess title or a specific rating to begin. We look for coaches who have a solid foundation in chess, enjoy working with students, and are committed to creating a positive and supportive learning environment. Applicants complete a screening process and background check before working with students.
Our coach training provides the curriculum knowledge, teaching practice, and guidance needed to grow from an assistant coach into a confident lead coach.
